Sooter, Exley Claim Wins for Eagles

WASHINGTON – Freshman Garrett Sooter won the men's 1,650-yard freestyle and junior Shannon Exley won the women's 100 free to highlight American University results as the Eagles lost a dual swimming meet to host Georgetown on Saturday.

The AU women lost 151-83, with the Hoya men earning a 141-78 triumph.

Sooter went 16:44.79 to capture the 1,650 for the Eagles, beating Georgetown's Chase Ladman by 12 seconds. The Eagle freshman had already reached the AU all-time top-16 in a rested meet earlier this season.

Exley went 54.65 to edge Bailey Page of Georgetown by 0.10 seconds for the win in the 100. She earlier had placed second in the 200 free (1:59.18).

The meet also included season-best efforts by the Eagle divers.

Juniors Fiona Caulfield (228.82) and Emma Shetter (203.02) each had season-bests on the 1-meter board. Caulfield came back with a 252.30 score at 3 meters to post her best mark at AU. Shetter finished with a season-best 205.42 on the high board.

Sophomore Scott Callander was second in the men's 100 butterfly, while senior Olivia Wons was second in the 100 back.

American travels to Army West Point next Saturday for a quad meet with Boston University and George Mason. The Eagles will compete in the Patriot League Championships at Bucknell from Feb. 15 to 18.
