DALLAS — Add SMU to the list of nationally ranked teams that the American University men's soccer team have defeated in the past three seasons. In the physically demanding contest, the Eagles battled back from an early deficit to score three goals in the second half to knock off No. 25 SMU, 3-1, on Sunday night.
In the past two seasons, the Eagles defeated No. 1 UCLA in 2014 and No. 17 Hofstra and No. 18 Loyola Marymount in 2015.
American finished with a 17-14 edge in shots with nine reaching goal. The Eagles also led the corner attacks, 6-2. Senior Lucas Belanger made three saves and his counterpart Michael Nelson made six saves on nine shots.
The Mustangs scored in the 15th minute off of a corner kick taken by Bryce Clark that found Colten Habecker.
Senior Dale Ludwig tied the contest in the 51st minute when he picked up a loose ball and tapped it in from 12 yards out.
20 minutes later, freshman Tim Neumann sent a cross over to classmate Max Holdsworth who headed the ball in from six yards out.
With seven minutes left to play, SMU got called for a foul inside the box which set up junior Joel Hart to convert on a rebound off his initial penalty kick.
SMU had one last chance with the final seconds ticking down, but Stanton Garcia had his shot blocked.
American will host Gonzaga and Cornell next weekend as part of the Capitol Cup.
