Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. – American got goals from four different players in building a 4-0 lead and went on to defeat Fairfield, 4-2, in an opening round match of the Terrapin Invitational field hockey tournament, hosted by the University of Maryland.
The Eagles, now 4-1 after having won three straight, will face No. 7 Maryland in Sunday's championship game at 2 p.m. The Terrapins beat California, 5-1, in Saturday's opening match.
Junior
Haley Bowcutt and sophomore
Rafaela Rubas each earned three points in the match with a goal and an assist for the Eagles, who dominated offensively with a 25-11 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Natalie Konerth opened the offense for AU at the 20:43 mark when she scored from an assist by Rubas off a penalty corner. Konerth has now scored goals in four straight matches.
With 2:46 left in the first half, Rubas scored on a penalty corner, with Bowcutt and
Natalie Marsh getting the assists.
AU made it four unanswered goals in the first 6:31 of the second half when Bowcutt broke loose in transition off a Stags penalty corner.
Fairfield scored two goals in the 52nd and 58th minute, dropping its record to 1-3 on the year.
Sophomore
Maura Jacobs improved her record in the AU goal to 3-0 by making three saves. Stags goalkeeper Caitlin Bennett had five saves.
Linnea Gonzales had two goals for Maryland in its win, as the Terrapin improved to 3-2 on the season.
The matches at the Lacrosse and Field Hockey Complex in College Park for AU head coach Steve Jennings, who is a 1997 graduate of Maryland.
