ODU Edges Eagles in Field Hockey, 2-1

WASHINGTONAshleigh Thomas converted a loose ball near the right post with 15 minutes left to break a tie and lift 20th-ranked Old Dominion to a 2-1 victory over American in a non-conference field hockey match Sunday at Jacobs Field.

Each team finished the opening weekend of the regular season with a 1-1 record.
 
Senior Natalie Konerth converted a penalty stroke with 22:55 remaining in the game to pull American even. It was her first goal of the season and the first penalty shot of the season for the Eagles.
 
Erin Huffman converted a penalty corner five minutes into the second half to give the Monarchs the lead. She converted an assist by Chrissy Horn.
 
American held a 10-7 edge in shots, forcing ODU goalkeeper Kealsie Robles to make four saves. Alexandra Morris had two saves in the Eagle cage.
AU held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.
 
American remains home for a pair of matches next weekend, playing host to William & Mary on Friday at 4:00 and James Madison on Sunday at 1 p.m.
