WASHINGTON - American University is back on the pitch for the second time in three days as the Eagles host 20th-ranked Old Dominion Sunday at noon in a non-conference matchp.
The Eagles earned a 3-1 victory over another Virginia opponent on Friday when they beat Richmond.
Junior Leah DiGiondomenico posted a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of the season, giving AU a 2-0 lead. After Richmond halved the advantage midway through the second half, Grace Parke scored an insurance marker with 5:58 remaining.
American begins its 18th season under head coach Steve Jennings, who has returned after a stint on the Team USA coaching staff at the Rio Olympic Games. Jennings will lead his Eagles into the new season after a 12-7 mark from 2015 and a 2016 schedule that includes 10 ranked opponents.
Senior Natalie Konerth, the reigning Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, leads a roster that includes 11 upperclassmen. Konerth led the Eagles in points (32) and assists (12) a year ago.
Konerth and sophomore Rafaela Rubas were recently voted to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. Rubas earned Rookie of the Year honors last season in the PL and led the Eagles last season in goals with 11.
Parke, Jess Davis and Natalie Marsh also return for their senior seasons at AU.
The Lady Monarchs are opening 2016 on a northern swing. Penn State, ranked 18th in the preseason, scored five unanswered goals to post a 6-2 victory over ODU.
Junior Danielle Grega picked up the new year where she left off, scoring both Lady Monarchs' goals after finishing 2015 as ODU's leading scorer.
ODU returns a dozen players from last year's team, including Big East Rookie of the Year Chrissy Horn.
