Box Score CORRECTED: Fixes scoring on AU goals
WASHINGTON – Grace Parke scored on a pass from Kat Roncoroni, ending a late comeback bid and lifting American University to a 3-1 victory over Richmond in the field hockey season-opener for both teams on Friday.
Parke's goal came with 5:58 left and came after the Spiders had come within a goal midway through the second half. Roncoroni sent a pass across the circle and found Parke open at the left post.
She scored on a loose ball after a penalty corner on an assist from
Rafaela Rubas with just 3:16 gone in the game.
Lucy Whalley then found DiGiandomenico open in front at 4:54 to give AU a 2-0 lead.
The two-goal lead held up as the Eagle defense was strong and AU went into halftime with a 6-1 shot advantage and a 4-0 edge in penalty corners.
Richmond pressed the action in the second half, getting on the scoreboard with 23:03 left on an unassisted goal from Megan Miller.
Spiders goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt finished with five saves, with
Alexandra Morris getting three in the Eagle cage.
AU finished with a 14-8 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
American hosts 20th-ranked Old Dominion on Sunday at noon.
