Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross's Tess MacKay scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining, as the American University lacrosse team ended its season with a heartbreaking 14-13 loss to the host Crusaders on Saturday afternoon.
MacKay's score, her fifth of the game, capped off a 9-2 second-half run by Holy Cross, which improved to 3-13 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League.
Meanwhile, American finishes the year with a 5-13 overall record and 2-7 mark in the Patriot League.
Senior captain Jessica Wojciechowski led the Eagles' offense, recording a career-high eight points with five goals and three assists. Sophomore Jennifer DeSimone added three goals and senior captain Olivia Mangan posted a goal and two assists.
With her two assists on Saturday, Mangan set the AU record for career assists with 59.
After Holy Cross scored in the opening minute of the contest, American tallied four goals in a three-minute span to take the lead, eventually pushing its lead to 6-1. While the Crusaders outscored the Eagles in the final 11 minutes of the half, AU was able to take an 8-5 advantage into the intermission.
American opened the second half with three straight goals to earn a six-point lead, its largest of the game, with 23:09 remaining. However, a Holy Cross score two minutes later sparked a 4-0 run by the Crusaders to cut the margin to 11-9.
Holy Cross eventually tied the game at 12-12 with 4:11 to play, but junior Madison Hoon put the Eagles back ahead off Mangan's record-setting assist at the 2:51 mark. However, the Crusaders scored twice in the final two minutes to take the lead.
American had another chance to score in the final 13 seconds as Hoon won the ensuing draw control. Although DeSimone was able to find the back of the net once more, the shot did not get off in time and the Crusaders were able to hold on for the come-from-behind win.
Holy Cross outshot AU 34-25 for the contest and had a 17-8 advantage on ground balls. The Crusaders also had a 16-13 edge on draw controls. Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper
