WASHINGTON – Matthew Rainey became the latest AU men's track student-athlete to hit an IC4A-qualifying mark in the 1,500-meter run Saturday, earning him recognition as the GEICO - AU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Rainey, a freshman from Brentwood, Tenn., finished second in the 1,500 at the Mason Spring Invitational this weekend in 3:54.96. His time was nearly two seconds better than the IC4A qualifying mark and cut nearly seven seconds off his previous season-best.
Rainey became the third Eagle this season to hit the IC4A standard in the 1,500 (Tirba and
Jim Belfatto).
The GEICO award is Rainey's first and the third given to an Eagle men's track student-athlete this season.
American is scheduled to be off next weekend and competes on April 23 at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore. The Eagles are preparing for the Patriot League Outdoor Championships on May 6 and 7 at Bucknell.
