ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Fiona Caulfield placed fourth in the women's 3-meter diving competition to lead individual finishes by American University in Saturday's final day of the 2016 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Navy.
Caulfield, a sophomore, scored 245.10 in the finals to post the best finish of the day for the Eagles. Teammate
Emma Shetter finished 16th, with her score of 206.10 moving her into 13th on AU's all-time list in the event.
Senior
Paris Wood placed seventh in the finals of the women's 200 backstroke, but set a school record of 1:59.55 in preliminary heats earlier in the day.
She snapped the mark of 2:00.78 set 17 years ago by Maite Trueba and became the first Eagle woman to break the 2-minute mark in the event. Wood set the school record in the 100 backstroke (55.96) earlier this season.
Overall, the AU women placed eighth in the team standings, while the men finished 10th. The Eagle men were just one point behind Holy Cross.
Junior
Kilian Korth won the consolation final in the men's 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.31. His career-best 1:49.46 jumped him from 11th to 6th on AU's all-time list.
Freshman
Julian Wainer placed 12th in the men's 1,650 freestyle, with his time of 16:05.35 moving him into ninth in AU history. He cut 31 seconds off his previous best time this season in the mile.
Scott Callander placed 13th in the men's 200 butterfly (1:50.89) and senior
Ali Follman was 16th in the women's 200 breaststroke (2:25.41) to earn individual points for the Eagles on Saturday night.
The host Midshipmen easily won both team titles, breaking 950 points on each side. Army West Point was second and Boston U. was third in both standings.
SATURDAY'S EAGLES NOTES
- Caylee Watson had a career-best 2:04.57 in the women's 200 backstroke to finish 19th in prelims and move from 8th to 7th on the all-time list. Rebecca Kaliff had a season-best 2:14.61.
- Sam Fromkin had a season-best 1:55.97 in the men's 200 back to finish 17th in prelims, while Liam Bond (1:57.69) and Marzuq Khan (1:58.75) also had season-bests.
- Shannon Exley had a season-best 53.62 to lead the Eagles in the women's 100 freestyle prelims. Lena Mentyka matched her best time of the year at 54.85.
- Ben Mitchell (49.34) and Roberto Bazzi (51.88) had season-bests in qualifying in the men's 100 free.
- Follman earned a second swim in the women's 200 breaststroke with a career-best 2:24.65 to place 15th in the early session. She remained 8th on the Eagles' all-time list. Alexis Danchak cut six seconds off her season-best with a mark of 2:29.53.
- Seniors Jakobi Jackson (2:12.31) and Toby McCarroll (2:20.47) had season-best marks in the men's 200 breaststroke.
- Tori Haviland had AU's best mark of the year in the women's 200 butterfly, going 2:08.84 in qualifying. Her career-best mark improved her time, which already stood 11th on AU's lists.
- Callander cut five seconds off his previous season-best in the men's 200 fly in the early-session, qualifying 11th in prelims. His time of 1:50.44 moved him into 5th all-time at AU. Fromkin (1:57.21), Bond (1:58.90) and Pat Hooks (2:01.02) also had their best marks of the season.
- Shannon Scovel (17:49.70) and Maddie Fazen (18:49.82) had season-bests in the women's 1,650 freestyle.
- Korth, Tomas Kloosterman, Fromkin and Callander placed 9th in the men's 400 freestyle relay in a season-best 3:10.19.
- Watson, Exley, Julianna Cavano and Wood were 7th (3:29.75) in the women's 400 free relay.
