ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Caylee Watson finished fifth in the women's 100-yard backstroke and joined Julianna Cavano with a pair of second swims for American University Friday at the 2016 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships being hosted by Navy.
Watson was one of three Eagles who qualified for the evening session in the women's 100 back. She went 56.06 in the final, just 0.01 seconds slower than her preliminary time in the early afternoon.
Paris Wood was eighth in the championship heat in 56.96, while Cavano was 13th in 57.29, giving the Eagles 29 points in that event.
Watson also finished 14th in the 100 butterfly 'B' final on Friday evening, going 56.69. Cavano also swam in the consolation final in the 400 IM, placing 16th in 4:29.95.
Junior
Kilian Korth also made an appearance in an 'A' final for the Eagles on Friday, placing sixth in the men's 100 back in 50.73.
AU earned a sixth in the women's 200 freestyle relay, with Wood, Watson,
Olivia Wons and
Shannon Exley going a season-best 1:36.10. Wood went a career-best 24.22 in the lead leg, moving into fifth place all-time at AU in the 50 free.
Scott Callander, Korth,
Sam Fromkin and
Jakobi Jackson went a season-best 1:28.76 in the men's 200 free relay, placing ninth.
American was eighth in the women's team standings, with the men in 10th after the third day of the four-day meet.
The host Midshipmen dominated both sides of the team standings, with the women holding a 290-point lead and the men going to the final day with a margin of 256 points.
FRIDAY'S EAGLE NOTES
- Cavano's swim of 4:29.62 in the 400 IM prelims cut almost four seconds off her previous career-best. Earlier this season she had moved into 10th on AU's top-16 list, but Friday's prelim time bumped her up to 7th… Shannon Scovel swam 4:42.08 to cut five seconds off her previous season-best.
- Freshman Sam Fromkin led the Eagles' marks in the men's 400 IM, placing 20th at 4:08.28, trimming his previous season-best by 10 seconds and posting AU's best time of the year. He barely missed AU's top-16, missing by 0.07 seconds. Julian Wainer went 4:09.76 for a season-best.
- Junior Caylee Watson earned a second swim in the women's 100 butterfly, going a career-best 56.42. She moved from 5th to 4th on AU's list. Alyssa Colasurdo tied for 19th in the prelims, with a career-best 57.47 bumping her from 14th to 6th.
- Freshman Scott Callander was 20th in the prelims in the men's 100 fly, swimming 50.20 to cut a second off his previous season-best. Callander moved into 8th all-time at AU with the mark. Pat Hooks swam 53.75 to cut two seconds off his season-best, while Marzuq Khan went a season-best 55.37.
- Shannon Exley (1:56.02), Tori Haviland (1:56.20) and Maddie Fazen (2:03.82) all had season-bests in the women's 200 freestyle.
- Ben Mitchell's 1:48.29 in Friday's 200 free prelims was a season-best.
- Alyssa Colasurdo placed 17th in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke, missing 16th by 0.13 seconds. Her mark of 1:06.49 was two seconds better than her career-best and moved her into 9th all-time at AU. Alexis Danchak had a season-best 1:07.70.
- Senior Jakobi Jackson posted AU's best mark of the season in the 100 breaststroke prelims, going 58.96. Toby McCarroll, another senior, had a season-best 1:03.59.
- Watson's 56.05 (5th) in the prelims of the women's 100 backstroke was the second-fastest mark ever at AU, behind only teammate Paris Wood's 55.96, posted this season at George Mason. Wood qualified 6th in the early session at 56.09. Cavano went 57.95 in the prelims to qualify 15th. Lena Mentyka also had a career-best in qualifying, with her 59.37 putting her in 13th all-time. Rebecca Kaliff went a season-best 1:02.93.
- Junior Kilian Korth qualified 6th in the men's 100 back in the early session, posting a career-best 50.30 to move into 6th all-time at AU. Khan (56.29) also had a season-best.
- Freshman Pat Weber, who joined the team just two weeks ago, placed 22nd in the men's 1-meter diving competition.
