Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – American University got goals from five different players, with Natalie Konerth and Rafaela Rubas each finishing with a goal and an assist to lift the Eagles to a 5-1 field hockey victory over Appalachian State Sunday in the final game of the AU Tournament.
American won its third straight game to improve to 3-1, while the Mountaineers fell to 1-3.
Lucy Whalley opened the scoring just 3:15 into the game when her shot went off a defender's stick and into the top shelf of the goal.
Sophia Crawshay converted a pass in transition from
Samantha McCormick and scored from close range in front to put the Eagles up 2-0 at halftime.
Just 2:32 into the second half, Rubas was patient with a feed from Konerth and found a narrow opening to score AU's third goal.
Jess Davis converted a turnover and found herself alone in front to put AU ahead 4-0 early in the second half.
Rubas then found Konerth with a good pass to the front of the net to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead with 18:06 remaining.
Appalachian scored with 3:41 to play on a penalty corner, with Caroline Phillips scoring from assists by Savannah Sheridan and Taylor Cimbalist.
AU used a 12-3 edge in shots to prevent any second-half rally and ended the match with a 20-10 advantage.
Mountaineer goalkeeper Cristina Ceppi had six saves, while
Kate McBeath had four saves and no goals against in 55 minutes.
American plays next on Saturday at home against Yale at noon. The Eagles travel to Maryland on Sunday for a 3 p.m. contest.
