Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – A pair of goals by Natalie Konerth the final 10 minutes ended a rally by Brown and lifted American to a 4-1 victory over the Bears in the AU Field Hockey Tournament Friday at Jacobs Field.
The Eagles improved to 2-1 overall, while Brown was playing its first match of the 2015 season.
Trailing 2-0, Alexis Miller put Brown on the board with a strong shot from the top of the circle, converting a pass from Katarina Angus. The goal came with 16:16 left in the second half.
The Bears pushed the offensive play for some time before an AU timeout stopped the momentum.
Konerth scored on a shot from the left wing off a pass from
Leah DiGiandomenico with 9:49 left to regain the two-goal advantage.
The Eagle junior then added insurance with a pair of stellar one-on-one moves, beating a defender in transition then the goalkeeper to score with 7:21 remaining.
American got a goal late in the first half when freshman
Rafaela Rubas converted a loose ball in the penalty circle with 7:24 left before halftime.
Fellow freshman
Lucy Whalley made it 2-0 just four minutes into the second half when she converted a rebound set up on a penalty corner.
American held a 15-7 edge in shots, including a dozen in the second half. Bears goalkeeper Katie Hammaker had five saves, while a strong Eagle defense forced
Kate McBeath to need only one save to earn the win.
Brown faces Appalachian State (1-1) on Saturday at noon before American returns to the field Sunday at 1 p.m. to play the Mountaineers.
