Box Score ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Looking for its third win over a nationally ranked team, the American University men's soccer team fell to No. 17 New Mexico, 2-1, in an overtime thriller at the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational.
American (6-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute after Nick Sifrin scored his second goal of the season when the ball fell to his feet. A Lobo defender attempted to clear the goal line, but failed and Sifrin's shot found its way into the back of the net.
After being in a dominant position for most of the match, AU conceded a late goal when UNM's Niko Hansen flicked the ball to himself and hit a far post shot to tie the match.
The Eagles looked as if they were going to put away the game-winning golden goal with some great chances early in overtime. The best opportunity came in the third minute of extra time when Liam Robley played a skillful through ball behind a defense putting Vinny Barone on a breakaway with UNM keeper Jason Beaulieu.
However — luckily for the Lobos — Beaulieu recorded his only save of the match to keep the scoreline level.
Minutes later, a succession of New Mexico corner kicks led to the play that ended the match. New Mexico midfielder Josh Goss served a cross which made its way through to the back post, where Francesco Casucci tapped it in for the winning tally.
New Mexico finished with a 20-13 edge in shots and a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Dylan Hobert made five saves in the loss for AU.
Dale Ludwig, Panos Nakhid, and Hobert were announced to the all-tournament team and AU was named co-runners up of the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational.
American will now prepare for its Patriot League campaign as it heads to Colgate on Saturday. The Eagles will then head to Princeton before returning home to face Boston University on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
