Box Score WASHINGTON – The American University men's soccer team dropped its first game this season 4-3 (2OT) to Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field.
The Eagles got out to a good start with two early goals, but were unable to hold on to their lead. Two early goals by American gave them an advantage, but Fairleigh Dickinson tied it up only a few moments later.
Vinny Barone got the Eagles on the board in the 10th minute on a chip shot to the near post. Two minutes later, Liam Robley served a corner kick to the head of Chris Fanet to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
FDU crawled back into the game with a pair of tallies to tie the contest at two. Just like the Eagles, the Knights found success at the corners off a great serve by Christian Dietrich to Tchamy Dantse Dantse in the 15th minute.
The Knights tied the game in the 28th minute on a give-and-go by Dietrich to Leo Dalesandro that found the back of the net on a tap in by Javen Palmer.
American broke the tie before the end of the half when Ludwig deflected Michael Cherry's shot off Robley's corner serve. The goal in the 42nd minute was the 16th shot of the first half for the Eagles, who outshot FDU by 10 (16-6).
Late in the second half, FDU tied the game for the second time as a long dribbler found the back of the cage off a strike by Jordan Ellison. The goal was scored with 1:37 remaining in regulation.
The first period of overtime was uneventful, but a quick counter attack in the second minute of the last period of overtime gave the Knights the golden-goal win over the Eagles.
The Eagles finished with a 22-13 edge in shots and 9-6 in corner kicks.
American falls to 5-1 on the season and may see an increase its national ranking, despite losing to Fairleigh Dickinson, before heading into the New Mexico Invitational next weekend when they will face Loyola Marymount and the host Lobos.
