WASHINGTON – The American University field hockey team looks to extend its three-game winning streak this weekend with a pair of contests. The Eagles begin play Saturday, as they host Yale in a noon contest. AU then visits eighth-ranked Maryland Sunday at 3 p.m.
American currently holds a 3-1 overall record after posting victories over Brown and Appalachian State at the AU Tournament last weekend. The Eagles outscored their opponents, 9-2, in the two games.
Junior Natalie Konerth led American last week with three goals and two assists, earning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors, as well as AU GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week accolades.
Senior Kate McBeath was tabbed the PL Goalkeeper of the Week after giving up just one goal in 125 minutes of action, while freshman Rafaela Rubas was selected as the PL Rookie of the Week, three goals and an assist for the weekend.
Konerth currently leads the Patriot League in both total points (10) and assists (4), while ranking tied for fifth nationally in assists per game. Meanwhile, Rubas is tied for first in the league in goals scored (4) and second in points (9).
McBeath also sits atop the Patriot League rankings, leading the league in both goals against average (1.28) and save percentage (.800).
Yale enters this weekend with a 1-1 mark. Last week, the Bulldogs earned a 2-1 overtime victory over Sacred Heart before falling, 2-1, at Quinnipiac.
Sophomore Carol Middough scored all three of the Bulldogs' goals in their opening weekend of competition, while goalkeeper Emilie Katz posted 13 saves and an .813 save percentage.
Maryland, ranked eighth in the latest coaches poll, currently holds a 2-2 overall record and hosts seventh-ranked Albany on Saturday. The Terps have lost their last two contests, dropping both games in overtime. Maryland fell to then 13th-ranked Boston College, 3-2, while coming up short in a 2-1 loss to No. 5 Duke.
Linnea Gonzales is the leading scorer for the Terps, registering eight points on four goals, while Anna Desoye has added two goals and three assists.
