Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond's Megan Miller scored off a penalty corner in the eighth minute of overtime, as the American University field hockey team dropped its season opener to the host Spiders, 2-1, Friday evening at Crenshaw Field.
After a scoreless opening period, the Eagles were the first to get on the board. Just over three minutes into the second half, sophomore Leah DiGiandomenico was able to corral a loose ball in the circle for a goal.
AU remained in the lead until Richmond knotted the score with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The two teams combined for just three shots down the stretch to set up the extra period.
The Spiders outshot the Eagles, 15-7, for the game, including a 9-1 edge in the first half alone. Richmond also was able to draw nine penalty corners, compared to just three for American.
Senior goalkeeper Kate McBeath had a solid performance in the cage for AU, recording seven saves.
The Eagles conclude their opening weekend of play on Sunday, when they visit 16th-ranked Old Dominion in a 1 p.m. contest.
