CATONSVILLE, Md. – The American University men's soccer team dropped its first and only exhibition match of the season in a 1-0 decision against the UMBC Retrievers on Tuesday.
The match gave AU a quality preview against a strong opponent, as UMBC is ranked 12th nationally in the Division I preseason poll by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Eagles had a chance to take an early lead after junior forward
Kibu Mbaluku won a penalty kick midway through the first half. But senior
Liam Robley was unable to convert from the spot as the Retriever goalkeeper saved the shot.
American's woes continued after junior
Chris Fanet was called offside after scoring on a free kick.
UMBC exposed the American defense in the second half after a cross from the right side was headed past AU keeper
Dylan Hobert to give the Retrievers the lead they held for the remainder of the match.
It seemed the Eagles may find a late equalizer when Eagle sophomore
Ian Winters found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper with less than five minutes in the match. But good work by the UMBC keeper kept the score line the same.
The match provided American with valuable experience, as several of the new members of the roster saw playing time. Eagles head coach Todd West was able to experiment with his team's depth as it prepares for the regular season.
American will begin its regular season in the Kuykenstrong D.C. College Cup at George Mason on Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. when it faces George Washington University. AU will face tournament host George Mason on Aug. 30 at 3 p.m.
The Eagles play their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 3 against Howard at 3 p.m.
