Eagles Dominate Coastal Carolina 3Ks as Outdoor Season Opens

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – American University coaches and student-athletes turned the men's 3,000-meter run into what looked like a stellar training session Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational track and field meet.

AU assistant coach Chris Kwiatkowski won the event in 8:24.72, followed directly by Josh Ellis (8:40.83) and Brendan Johnson (8:42.12). Sam Doud earned sixth in 8:52.77, with Peter Rowe in 17th at 9:20.01.

The Eagles also competed in the 4x800 relays on Friday. Terrell Green, Liam Purdy, Alaeldin Tirba and Jim Belfatto placed second on the men's side in 8:00.80, eight seconds behind Northern Kentucky.

The Eagle women's team was third, as Corina Velazco, Julienne DeVita, Kelseagh Budris and Reagan Kolakowski ran 9:37.18. The relay mark was the eighth-best time on AU's all-time list in the event.

AU staff had a strong performance on the women's side also, as assistant coach Kerri Gallagher dominated the women's 3,000, winning in 9:32.61 to post a 30-second victory.

The meet wrapped up the Eagles' spring-break training trip to some warm weather.

American's next competitions are scheduled for March 28 at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis and the Maryland Invitational in College Park.
