BOSTON – The American University field hockey team made a late push in the second half, but was unable to get past 14th-ranked Boston University in the championship game of the 2015 Patriot League Tournament, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Terriers.

BU, the top seed in this year's tournament, got on the board midway through the first half and added another score with less than nine minutes remaining in the period.

Meanwhile, American, which was outshot 7-2 in the first 35 minutes, was unable to get its offense going and went into the intermission with a 2-0 deficit.

The Eagles began to create more offensive pressure in the second half and it paid off, as junior Natalie Konerth tipped in a pass from classmate Natalie Marsh to cut the margin to 2-1 with 17:12 remaining.

Unfortunately, American was unable to capitalize on any of its scoring opportunities down the stretch and the Terriers escaped with the one-goal victory to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Senior goalkeeper Kate McBeath had a solid effort in the cage for the Eagles, recording six saves in the loss, including four in the first half alone.

"We are so sorry to see our season come to an end, but congratulate BU on a great game and outstanding season," said American head coach Steve Jennings. "In the first half, BU was dominant, but to our credit, we fought hard the whole way.

"We made a late run and had a big momentum shift in the second half, but just ran out of time to find the equalizer."

The Eagles conclude the 2015 season with a 12-7 overall record, marking the third time in the last four seasons they have finished with at least 10 victories.

"We thank our seniors for all that they have done over their four years," said Jennings. "Their imprint on our program will never be forgotten."
