BOSTON – Seeking its 10th Patriot League title in program history, the American University field hockey team heads north this weekend for the 2015 Patriot League Tournament, hosted by top-seeded Boston University.
The Eagles, who enter the tournament as the second seed, face third-seed Lafayette in the second semifinal on Friday at 2 p.m. The first semifinal will pit the host Terriers against fourth-seeded Bucknell.
AU is making its 15th PL Tournament appearance in as many seasons in the league, while Bucknell and Lafayette hold the league record with 18 appearances each. The newest member of the group, Boston University, has qualified for the tournament in each of its three seasons in the league, capturing the title in 2014.
Meanwhile, the Eagles and Leopards are tied for the lead in all-time Patriot League titles with nine each.
American and Lafayette meet in the Patriot League Tournament for the fifth time in the last seven years. In the last tournament matchup between the two teams, the Eagles earned a 2-1 overtime victory in the 2013 semifinals en route to their ninth PL title.
American concluded the regular season with an 11-6 overall record and 5-1 ledger in the Patriot League after defeating Bucknell, 3-1, in its home finale.
A pair of AU players received Patriot League major awards this season, with senior Kate McBeath earning PL Goalkeeper of the Year accolades and freshman Rafaela Rubas recognized as the PL Rookie of the Year.
Junior Natalie Konerth, who was also tabbed the PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joined McBeath and Rubas on the All-Patriot League first team, while sophomore defender Angela Virtu earned second-team all-league honors.
Konerth leads American in both points and assists this season with 28 and 12, respectively, leading the league in both categories. Rubas is the Eagles' leading goal scorer with nine, while she ranks second on the team with 23 total points.
Meanwhile, McBeath finished the regular season ranked second in the league in both goals against average (2.25) and shutouts (2), while ranking third in save percentage (.670).
Lafayette finished the regular season with a 9-9 record and 3-3 mark in the Patriot League after earning a pair of 1-0 victories over Colgate and Yale in their final two contests.
The Leopards are led by a pair of juniors in unanimous first-team all-league selection Amanda Magadan and second-team all-league honoree Katelyn Arnold. Magadan posted a team-high 22 points (9g, 4a) for Lafayette this season, while Arnold has recorded a 2.51 goals against average and .651 save percentage in goal for the Leopards.
Boston University, ranked 14th in the nation in the latest coaches' poll, registered a 12-6 overall record and 6-0 mark in the Patriot League to earn the top seed in this year's tournament. The Terriers are coming off a 4-2 loss to fifth-ranked Wake Forest.
BU head coach Sally Starr was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year for guiding the Terriers to the top of the league standings, while seniors Sofi Laurito and Rachel Coll earned PL Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year awards, respectively.
Meanwhile, Bucknell concluded the regular season with an 8-11 overall record and 3-3 ledger in the Patriot League after falling to the Eagles in their season finale.
Senior Kiersten Sydnor led the Patriot League with 14 goals and 31 points on the season to earn first-team all-league honors and was joined on the first team by by junior defender Anna Wills.
