WASHINGTON – After completing the first half of its Patriot League schedule with a perfect record, the American University volleyball team begins its run through the second half of league play with a pair of home contests this weekend, Oct. 23-24.
The Eagles host Bucknell on Friday at 7 p.m., before facing Lafayette on Saturday at 2 p.m.
American, which holds a 17-6 overall record and an 8-0 mark in the league, is coming off a tough five-set loss (25-14, 25-19, 20-25, 24-26, 18-20) to local non-conference rival George Washington.
The Eagles were led by their seniors against the Colonials, with Allison Cappellino finishing with a season-high 19 kills and Kristyna Lindovska adding a season-best 16 kills. Monika Smidova recorded a season-high 54 assists to go along with 16 digs, and Sarah Katz had her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Additionally, sophomore Hoakalei Dawson notched 20 digs, reaching the mark for the third time this season.
For the season, Cappellino leads American with 3.22 kills per set, while Lindovska adds 2.43 kills per set. Smidova averages 9.83 assists and 3.08 digs per set, Dawson leads the team with 3.67 digs per set and sophomore Erin Swartz leads the league in blocks per set with 1.26.
Bucknell enters the weekend with a 10-9 overall record and sits in fifth place in the league standings with a 4-5 mark. The Bison split a pair of PL matches last weekend, defeating Holy Cross (3-1) and falling to Army West Point (3-0).
Senior Karen Campbell averages 3.13 kills and 1.20 blocks per set to lead Bucknell, while freshman Blake Buchholz adds 2.44 kills and a team-high 3.03 digs per set.
Lafayette currently owns a 10-10 overall record and is tied for seventh place in the Patriot League with a 2-7 record. The Leopards fell to Lehigh in straight sets on Wednesday evening.
Senior Brianne Giangiobbe leads Lafayette with 2.86 kills per set, while senior Lauren Pisauro averages 4.47 digs per set, ranking second in the Patriot League. Junior Jet Manzi and sophomore Meghan Donohue rank first and second in the league in service aces per set with 0.45 and 0.42, respectively.
