Back in the Win Column, Volleyball Defeats Cleveland State in Straight Sets

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A thrilling second set highlighted a clean sweep of Cleveland State for the American University volleyball team, as the Eagles bounced back from a loss earlier on Friday afternoon with an emphatic victory in the night cap. A 15-kill and 11-dig double-double from Sophie Dufour led the way on the offensive side of the net, while a season-high 12 block assists boosted AU defensively.

Notable
  • Dufour posted her best hitting percentage of the season at .394, committing just two errors. The freshman has notched double-digit kills in five of the first six matches of the season.
  • Up front, Elise Sterling led the way with three block assists and 2.5 total denials. Carly Sciborski and Prinzez Zeck added two blocks apiece.
  • After a quiet one-kill performance this morning, Salme Adeele Hollas got back on track with nine kills and eight digs.
  • Playing her first set of the season earlier on Friday morning, Maddy Stewart contributed nine digs and added an ace.
  • Deniz Dakak dished out 31 assists, while Bella Marrero took on 17 digs.
  • The Eagles are now out to a 5-1 start to the season.
How it Happened
  • The Eagles came out strong, starting the match on a 14-5 run that was sparked by dominance up front. The Eagles had eight block assists during the stretch, including three from Elise Sterling. Dufour and Hollas added two kills each on the run as well.
  • American kept command of the set, allowing just six more points and cruising to a 25-11 win.
  • The second set was a thriller, with AU fighting off two set points to get the win.
  • The Eagles led for the majority of the frame, but a 7-0 run from the Vikings turned a 23-17 lead into a 24-23 deficit.
  • Facing the first set point, Elise Sterling came up with a block on Madisyn Green to keep AU alive.
  • Down 26-25, Deniz Dakak found Dufour for back-to-back kills to give the Eagles the lead. On the next point, Prinzez Zeck slammed home the final kill of the set to give AU the 27-25 victory.
  • Carrying momentum into the third frame, the Eagles got out to a comfortable lead yet again. Three kills from Dufour, another from Dakak, and one from Sterling put AU in front 9-2.
  • With the score 23-17, just as it was in the second set, the Eagles shut the door with a Hollas kill before CSU made an attacking error on the final point. 25-17 was the final.
