Box Score HAMILTON, N.Y. – Freshman Rafaela Rubas scored a pair of goals and junior Natalie Marsh tallied three assists to lead the American University field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Colgate in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 8-4 overall on the season and 3-1 in the league, while the Raiders fell to 0-12 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Junior Natalie Konerth opened the scoring midway through the first half, capitalizing on a penalty corner attempt. Rubas scored on another penalty corner with just over two minutes remaining in the period to give American a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
Colgate got on the scoreboard at the 25:25 mark in the second half, scoring on its own corner attempt. Rubas then added the final goal of the game in the 59th minute to push AU's lead back to two.
The Eagles outshot the Raiders, 21-6, for the contest, and held a 12-6 advantage on penalty corners.
Colgate goalkeeper Maria Krull finished with 13 saves, while AU freshman Maura Jacobs recorded two saves in her first collegiate start.
"We created a great deal of chances today, but need to be better in our execution going forward," said American head coach Steve Jennings. "While pleased with the result, we know we need to take it up another notch to play at the level we aspire to make our norm."
The Eagles are back in action next weekend with a pair of contests. American will host Lafayette at noon on Saturday, while taking on Kent State Sunday at 1 p.m.
