Box Score One day after knocking off the nation's top-ranked team in overtime, the American University men's soccer team once again used a golden goal to knock off a top program. The Eagles defeated UC Riverside, 1-0, 3:54 into extra time as sophomore Michael Cherry came through with game-winning score. Thanks to the two overtime victories, the Eagles won New Mexico's Grange & Ashwill Memorial Tournament.
Even though American's offense was outshot in the contest, 13-10, The Eagles' defense refused to bend and allowed senior Conor Osborne to play one in deep in the Riverside zone to set up Cherry with the winning strike.
"This is truly one of the best weekends for American University soccer in my time at the program," said head coach Todd West.
Playing their second game in 48 hours and coming off a program-defining win over No. 1 UCLA at the Grange & Ashwill Memorial Tournament hosted by the New Mexico Lobos, the Eagles kept their momentum rolling in a big way.
The defense headed by Osborne and co-captain Jordan Manley limited the Highlanders to only one shot on goal, which was stopped by third-year keeper Dylan Hobert.
American's defense also cleared eight total corner kicks, keeping UC Riverside scoreless for AU's and Hobert's second shutout over the year in only four games.
Five Eagles were named to the All-Tournament team with three capturing special honors. Senior defender Jake Weinreb was selected as the MVP of the tournament, sophomore forward Dale Ludwig took Offensive MVP honors and senior defender Christian Robbs earned the Defensive MVP award. Seniors Stephen Hauschild and Osborne were also selected to the All-Tournament Team.
AU returns to Reeves Field this weekend, hosting the Capitol Cup and welcoming Hartwick to Washington, D.C. on Friday at 4 p.m., before taking on Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday at 1 p.m.
