Box Score Scoring two of its goals in the first eight minutes of action,
the 19th-ranked American University field hockey team earned a 3-0
victory over Saint Joseph's Friday in the opening game of the
AU Tournament.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-1 on the year, while the
Hawks drop to 2-1.
American was able to take advantage of an early penalty corner,
getting on the board just over a minute into the contest as
freshman Leah DiGiandomenico notched the first goal of her career
with a feed from senior captain Grace Wilson.
The Eagles added to their advantage with 26:50 on the clock in
the first half, with senior Jess Davis scoring in transition.
Meanwhile, freshman Sophia Crawshay buried her first career tally
16 minutes into the contest with an assist by Grace Parke.
While AU controlled the tempo in the first half, the tables were
turned after the intermission, with the Hawks outshooting the
Eagles 9-1 in the second period. However, American's defense
held strong to secure its second-straight shutout.
Saint Joseph's took six penalty corners in the contest,
including five in the second half, and was awarded a penalty stroke
in the final minute that missed wide, while American was awarded
four penalty corners in the game.
The Eagles conclude the AU Tournament on Sunday, as they host
16th-ranked Michigan State at noon. Meanwhile, Saint Joseph's
and Michigan State will meet Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
