WASHINGTON - After
winning a pair of contests in the AU Tournament last weekend, the
18th-ranked American University field hockey team heads to College
Park, Md., this weekend, Sept. 13-14, for the Terrapin
Invitational, hosted by the University of Maryland.
The Eagles will face Towson on
Saturday at 11:00 a.m., while meeting Drexel on Sunday at 4:00
p.m.
American enters this weekend with a
3-1 overall record, posting three consecutive shutouts. In the AU
Tournament, the Eagles earned a 3-0 victory over Saint
Joseph's to start the weekend, with freshmen Leah
DiGiandomenico, Sophia Crawshay and junior Jess Davis each scoring
first-half goals.
Meanwhile, American outlasted
16th-ranked Michigan State in a 1-0 double-overtime victory. After
more than 97 minutes of scoreless action, senior Grace Wilson broke
the stalemate by converting a penalty corner late in the second
extra period. Wilson, who also scored an assist versus Saint
Joseph's, was voted the Patriot League Corvias Defensive
Player of the Week for her performance.
Also receiving Patriot League
weekly accolades was junior Kate McBeath, who was tabbed the
Corvias Goalkeeper of the Week. McBeath, who has not allowed a goal
since the second half of the season opener, recorded eight saves on
the weekend, including five against the Spartans.
Towson currently holds an 0-3
record and is coming off a 5-1 loss to St. Francis (Pa.). The
Tigers have scored just two goals in their first three games, with
Tessa Jarvis and Morgan Skavdahl each getting on the board.
Meanwhile, Stacey Mackintosh has registered both assists for Towson
this season.
Drexel brings a 3-1 mark into the
weekend after defeating Fairfield, 3-0, in its last contest. Rachel
Sumfest leads the Dragons with three goals and three assists, while
Meghan Plank has added two goals and four assists. Additionally,
goalkeeper Jantien Gunter has saved nearly 78 percent of her shots
faced and carries a 0.54 GAA.
