The American University lacrosse team used a second half rally
to close out its season with a 10-9 win over Colgate on Saturday
afternoon at Jacobs Field.
"It was a really tough game and a really great game, just a
great win for us to send our seniors out on a high note," said Head
Coach Emma Wallace. "It was a solid day in
the cage for Ashley
Dalisera, she really stepped up and we were able to
finish in the attack. My defense was extraordinary at the end of
that game and I really couldn't be prouder of them."
Colgate (7-8, 4-4) struck first on an unassisted tally by Megan
Ark just under two minutes in but the Eagles took the lead on
consecutive goals by Olivia
Mangan and Alex
Lugovina 32 seconds apart. The teams traded scores
before the Raiders notched four unanswered goals to take a 6-3
advantage with 14:57 to go in the first half. Jordan
Harrington and Lugovina ended the run with
back-to-back tallies a minute apart as Colgate went into the break
with a 6-5 edge.
American (5-12, 1-7) carried its momentum into the second half,
rattling off four more unanswered goals to take the lead for good.
Jessica
Wojciechowski ended the streak on a free position goal
to give the Eagles a 9-6 lead with 14:38 remaining. Alison Flood
found the back of the net for the Raiders on a free position but
Mangan answered for American, completing a hat trick on an
unassisted goal with 8:23 to go in the game. Colgate chipped away
at American's lead in the final four minutes, but was unable to
secure the equalizer as the Eagles held on for its first Patriot
League win of the season, 10-9.
Three players tallied three points in the game for the Eagles
with Mangan scoring a team-high three goals, Wojciechowski adding
two goals and one helper and Harrington notching one goal and a
team-best two assists. Madison
Hoon led the team with three draw controls while Hoon
and Emily
Shields collected three ground balls apiece. Dalisera
made nine saves between the pipes for American.
Ark finished with a game-high four goals and Flood recorded
three points on two goals and one assist. Lauren Gorajek posted
four draw controls and Jennie Berglin collected three ground balls
and made four saves for the Raiders.
"The seniors did an incredible job all season and it's been a
tough year for us as a program. I couldn't be prouder of the way
that they've shown up every single day to go to work and get better
and I think this end game has been a true testament to their effort
all season. We're going to miss them tremendously, Alex, Emily
Maher, Lauren
Binstein and Nicole
Lombardo, and we're glad to send them out on this
note," said Wallace.
Colgate held a 21-19 advantage in shots and 11-10 edge in draw
controls. The Eagles had a 13-12 edge in ground balls collected for
the game.
