Box Score The American University women's lacrosse team had its Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field and despite an early seven-goal deficit, the Eagles tied it up with Boston U., at 10-all, late in the game, but eventually fell, 12-11.
It was a back-and-forth start to the contest as the teams were deadlocked at 2-2, but BU (1-4, 1-0 PL) took control with seven-straight goals. AU (2-5, 0-1 PL) rallied in the closing minutes, scoring the final two goals of the half and continued the momentum with a 6-1 run to open the second however, tying the game up midway through the stanza.
"We regrouped at the end of the first and continued our momentum to start the second half," said head coach Emma Wallace. "The key was draw controls and possession. We were much better in the second in those areas, which allowed us to get back in the game. We had a chance to win late and by cleaning up a few early errors and learning from those mistakes, we will be ready for our next league game."
Jessica Wojciechowski led the way for American with three goals, pacing six Eagle goal-scorers, four of whom had two goals each. Wojciechowski scored the key goal late in the game for AU with American trailing by two scores and only two minutes remaining.
Wojciechowski took the feed from Alex Lugovina and buried it to bring the Eagles within one goal of Boston. American controlled late with only a minute left, but Madison Hoon's last second shot was saved by BU's Caroline Meegan, as the Terriers escaped with the win. Meegan made six saves in the contest.
Boston U. held a 16-8 advantage in draw controls, but AU only trailed by one in the second half in that category, 6-5. The Eagles also battled a tough BU team which committed 25 total fouls to American's seven.
AU returns to action next Saturday, March 15, when they travel to Worcester, Mass., to take on Holy Cross in American's second-straight Patriot League matchup.
