The American University lacrosse snapped its three game skid on Wednesday afternoon at Mount St. Mary's, holding off a second half rally by the Mount for an 11-9 victory in Emmitsburg, Md.

"It was a solid win with our defense holding them to nine goals and our offense maintaining control of the ball," said Head Coach Emma Wallace. "There is still room to improve our execution and attention to detail to clean up mistakes. We look forward to preparing for Boston U. on Saturday and playing a complete game of AU Lacrosse." 

Mount St. Mary's (1-3) struck first on an unassisted tally by Lindsay Diaz but Jamie Silverman answered with a goal of her own three minutes later to knot it up. The Mount took a 2-1 lead on a free position goal by Kelly Maloney. The Eagles responded with a 5-1 run for a 6-3 advantage with 13:43 left in the first half. Alex Lugovina notched back-to-back goals for American just over two minutes apart for the 8-4 lead. Emily Maher sent the Eagles into the intermission with a 10-5 advantage, scoring with one second remaining as Olivia Mangan added the assist.

Lugovina completed the hat trick two and a half minutes into the second half to give American (2-4) an 11-5 lead. Mount St. Mary's responded with four unanswered goals to make it a two-score contest but the Eagles' defense was able to hold the Mount off the scoreboard in the final 12 minutes for the 11-9 final score. 

Lugovina finished with a game-high five points, adding two assists. Terese Buechli and Silverman notched two goals apiece with Jordan Harrington, Maher, Mangan and Jessica Wojciechowski also scoring for American. Buechli and Lugovina led the Eagles with four ground balls collected apiece and Maher posted four draw controls. Ashley Dalisera made two saves as the starting goalkeeper.

Maloney registered four goals and Diaz had three for Mount St. Mary's. Diaz also led the team with four ground balls collected and two draw controls. Steph Rurkowski made 14 stops between the pipes for the Mount. 

American held an 11-10 edge in draw controls and 27-21 advantage in ground balls collected. The Eagles also had a 36-15 advantage in shots for the game.

American opens Patriot League play against one of the conference's newest members, Boston U., on Saturday, Mar. 8 at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
