Box Score The American University lacrosse team fought back from a three-goal deficit late in the second half and took UMBC to double overtime, but couldn't complete a comeback as it fell 11-10 on Saturday night in Baltimore, Md.
"Today's game was a very hard fought battle, Ashley Dalisera had a standout performance in her first collegiate lacrosse game and our midfielders stepped up their production to force the game into overtime," said Head Coach Emma Wallace. "We look forward to getting back to work to prepare for Richmond on Wednesday."
UMBC (1-2) scored three goals in the first four minutes before Jessica Wojciechowski found the back of the net for the Eagles. Alyssa Semones put the Retrievers up 5-1 with consecutive tallies but Olivia Mangan answered with two straight goals for American. Wojciechowski scored her second goal of the day on a free position with 1:30 to play to make it a one-score game, 5-4, at the end of the first half.
UMBC went up 7-4 out of the break on goals by Rachel Benzing and Mackenzie Reese 13 seconds apart. Wojciechowski was able to notch her second consecutive hat trick and Jamie Silverman scored her first of the day 37 seconds later to cut the Retrievers' lead to one, 7-6, with 25:18 to play. But UMBC went back up three, 9-6, on goals from Abby Wilson and Semones.
Emily Maher completed a hat trick in just three minutes to bring American (1-2) within one once again and Mangan posted her third tally of the day to give the Eagles its first lead, 10-9, with four minutes remaining. Wilson was able to score with 3:11 left to play to knot it up at 10-all and send the game to overtime.
Maher controlled the draw in the first overtime but Mangan's shot was stopped by Kelly Gielner. The Retrievers' had an opportunity in the closing seconds of extra time with the American defense blocking Semones' free position attempt. Alex Lugovina nearly ended the game in the double overtime, but Gielner made the save and Reese was able to put it away, slipping a shot past Dalisera for the 11-10 final score.
Mangan finished with a career-high six points, besting her career marks with three goals and three assists. Wojciechowski posted her second straight hat trick while Maher notched her first of the season. Lugovina collected a team-best three ground balls and Maher had a team-high five draw controls with two caused turnovers. Dalisera made five saves as the starting goalkeeper for the Eagles.
Semones led UMBC with four points on three goals and one assist. Anna Barnett made nine stops as the starting goalkeeper and Gielner made two saves in extra time.
American finished with a 15-9 advantage in ground balls collected and held a 13-12 edge in draw controls. The Eagles also outshot UMBC 30-23 for the game.
The Eagles will return to Jacobs Field to face Richmond on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live and for free on the Patriot League Network.
