The American University swimming & diving teams got a warm up for the 2014 Patriot League Championships on Saturday, competing in an unscored meet at the United States Naval Academy.
The Eagles had a chance to acclimate to the pool in Annapolis, Md., while several swimmers posted top-10 finishes against foes from Navy, Army, Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh, Shippensburg and the Naval Academy Aquatics Club senior group.
Senior Matt Wurm had one of the top performances of the day, placing third overall in the 200 IM, finishing in 1:56.44, just .43 second behind Brendan Lorton from Army. Classmate Bobby Ballance also competed in the 200 IM, finishing eighth with a time of 1:59.09.
Wurm went on to place fourth in the 200 back at 1:54.82.
On the women's side, sophomore Paris Wood earned silver in the 100 back, with a time of 59.20. Fellow classmate Ellie Liang also posted a top-10 finish in the event, touching the wall in 1:01.39, nearly two seconds faster than her seed time. Rookie Caylee Watson made it three top-10's in the 100 back, placing ninth at 1:01.46.
Sophomore Celeste Borras took third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.08 while rookie Alexis Danchak placed ninth in the race at 1:10.17.
A third rookie posted a top-10 time as Karla Hernandez-Mejia finished fifth in t3 back, touching the wall in 2:12.27.
The four-day Patriot League Championships begin on Wednesday, February 19.
