Box Score WASHINGTON – Playing its first non-conference match since late September, the American University men's soccer team took on the top squad in the Ivy League Wednesday at Reeves Field. Despite the Eagles owning the shots advantage, 15-12, it was Princeton that was able to capitalize, coming away with a 2-0 win.
The match was only the third time this season in which the Eagles had allowed two goals and only the second time in a defeat.
Tigers' goalkeeper Ben Hummel made six saves in the match to earn his sixth shutout of the year, improving Princeton's unbeaten streak to seven games.
Conversely, American saw its five-game unbeaten stretch come to a close as they were without starting keeper Dylan Hobert. Sophomore Lucas Belanger, who made the first start of his young career, registered four saves while facing six shots on goal and four corner kicks.
After a scoreless first half, Princeton's attacking duo of Cameron Porter and Thomas Sanner showed why they are both ranked in the top 30 nationally in goals per game.
Porter made a sensational one-man effort deep in the AU zone to net the game-winner in the 65th minute, scoring from 15 yards out for his 13th goal of the season. He entered the match ranked second in the country in goals.
Sanner followed his teammate's lead 15 minutes later for the insurance goal, netting his eighth of the year. Princeton is 15th in the nation in scoring average at 2.0 goals per game.
American pressed the action late and had a few opportunities, including senior co-captain Jordan Manley's long strike the made it past Hummel but found the post instead.
The Eagles now focus on their season finale on Saturday at noon against Colgate. With a win, American clinches the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will host a quarterfinal match at Reeves Field next Tuesday.
