Box Score WASHINGTON – The American University men's soccer team posted an impressive come-from-behind win on the road Saturday at Lafayette, netting the win in extra time, 2-1.
It was first-year transfer and starting midfielder Liam Robley who scored the gamewinner for American off a free kick. With less than a minute left in the first overtime period the Eagles showed their prowess in extra time.
Robley took the kick from just outside the box, faking towards the wall and the near post, but blasted it left past the dive of the outstretched keeper for the win.
"We competed on the road today in a difficult environment," said head coach Todd West. " It was not the prettiest game, but a huge three points. It was a great strike to win it by Liam."
It was Lafayette who scored first in the match after a scoreless first half. Nate Arronson was able to finish off a cross behind the AU defense for the first score of the match.
The lead would not last long however as just over eight minutes later, Chris Fanet finished the feed from senior midfielder Mark Plaisance to tie it up at 1-all.
Both teams continued to battle, looking for the go-ahead score in the final 20 minutes, but neither side could find the advantage.
Momentum swung AU's way with less than a minute remaining as a second yellow card on Lafayette's Ben Marks put American up a man for extra time.
It was an evenly matched contest throughout, with AU edging Lafayette in shots, 12-11; the final attempt making the difference.
The Eagles return to the pitch on Reeves Field this Wednesday at 3 p.m. when Patriot League play continues against Loyola Maryland.
