Volleyball Remains Undefeated with Back-to-Back Wins Over Manhattan, UMES

The American University volleyball team brought home its second straight tournament crown, remaining undefeated with wins over Manhattan, 3-1, and UMES, 3-0, at the Sacred Heart Invitational on Saturday.

American (6-0) opened the day against the Jaspers. The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Manhattan tied it up on a block by Anna Kitlar and Jade Gray. The set would be knotted up 10 more times before a kill by Malia McGuinness and an error by American gave the Jaspers a 26-24 win. 

The second set went back and forth at the start, but five straight points gave the Eagles an 18-14 advantage. Manhattan (4-1) battled back to make it a three-point match, 20-17, and American responded with four consecutive tallies as an ace from Monika Smidova put the Eagles up, 24-17. The Jaspers continued to fight, using a 4-0 run to put the score at 24-21 and forcing American to call a timeout. A kill by Juliana Crum secured the win for the Eagles and tied the match at one set apiece.

American broke away in the third, holding a six-point advantage after a kill by Crum, 16-10. After back-to-back points by Manhattan, the Eagles went on a 9-1 run to close out the set for the 25-13 win. 

American jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the fourth set, extending their advantage to 19-10 after a Jaspers' error. The Eagles continued to roll, with three consecutive errors by Manhattan ending the match to give American the 25-14 win.

Smidova tallied her first double-double of the year for the Eagles with 49 assists and 14 digs, also adding six kills and hitting .500 over the match. Kelly McCaddin led American with 14 kills, hitting .571, and registering five blocks while Megan Rosburg notched a team-best 20 digs with a career-high six aces. 

American closed out the day with a 3-0 sweep of UMES (0-6). The Eagles took an early 14-3 advantage and continued to dominate on its way to a 25-13 win in the first set. American continued to roll in the second, going up 13-4 early and ending the match on a 7-1 run for the 25-12 victory.

The Eagles took a 9-3 lead to start the third set, forcing UMES to call a timeout. The Hawks cut American's lead to four on a kill by Petra Jerabkova but the Eagles answered with a 7-2 run for the 20-11 advantage. Sarah Katz secured the sweep for American, tallying a kill for the 25-15 set win and match point. 

Katz and McCaddin each posted 11 kills to lead American in its final match, with the pair adding four and five blocks, respectively. Smidova finished with 22 assists and seven digs and Crum recorded a team-high 17 digs. The Eagles held UMES to a -.047 hitting percentage for the match.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, McCaddin and Rosburg were recognized on the All-Tournament Team.

American continues its road trip at Coppin State on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 p.m.
