Volleyball Sweeps Sacred Heart to Open Sacred Heart Invitational

The American University volleyball team continued its streak of sweeps on Friday afternoon at Sacred Heart to open play in the Sacred Heart Invitational, rolling to a 3-0 victory to remain undefeated on the year.

American (4-0) rolled in the first set, jumping out to a 12-5 advantage on an ace by Kelly McCaddin. The Eagles used a 6-0 run for its largest lead of the set, 22-12, and closed it out with three consecutive points for the 25-14 win. 

Sacred Heart (2-1) kept the second set close before American broke away on an 8-0 run to take a 10-point lead, forcing the Pioneers to call the timeout. Sacred Heart battled back to make it a five-point game on a block from Sarah Krufka and Maddie Losure. The Eagles were able to hold off an attempt at a rally, closing out the set with a 6-2 run with a Morgan Hendrix kill securing the 25-16 victory and 2-0 match lead.

American opened the third set with an early 5-0 advantage after a block by Hendrix. Sacred Heart battled back, cutting it to a two-point match on a kill by Krufka. The Eagles pulled away again, tallying four straight points to take an 18-11 advantage as the Pioneers called a timeout. Sacred Heart came out of the break with an 8-2 run to cut American's lead to one, 20-19. The Eagles responded with a 5-1 rally to secure the sweep and a 25-21 set three win. 

Kristyna Lindovska led American with 13 kills while Hendrix added five kills and a team-high six blocks in the match. Juliana Crum registered 12 digs and two aces to lead the Eagles and Monika Smidova notched 28 assists with nine digs and two aces.

American outhit Sacred Heart, .301 to .036, for the match, holding the Pioneers to a -.026 hitting percentage in the final set. Dianis Mercado led Sacred Heart with 11 kills with Ana Gonzalez recording 12 digs and Kiki Robinson tallying 27 assists. 

The Eagles continue play in the Sacred Heart Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, September 7. American opens the day against Manhattan at 10 a.m. before taking on UMES at 3 p.m.
