Box Score The American University volleyball team swept its second straight Patriot League opponent, defeating Bucknell, 3-0, on Saturday night.
American (16-1, 2-0) took an early advantage before the Bison came back to tie the match four times, earning a 10-9 edge on a kill by Jessica Serrato. A kill by Allison Cappellino knotted it up and the set was tied four more times before the Eagles responded with a 3-0 run for the 17-14 lead. Bucknell made it a two-point match, 22-20, on a kill by Morgan Mientus but American was able to close out the set with a kill by Cappellino for the 25-22 win.
The Eagles jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set, forcing Bucknell (6-7, 0-4) to call a timeout. American continued to pull away, going up 17-10 on a kill by Monika Smidova. The Bison fought back within four, 20-16, following a 4-0 run but the Eagles held off the rally as back-to-back kills from Bree Scarbrough and Morgan Hendrix secured the 25-17 victory and 2-0 match lead.
American registered nine consecutive points to open the third set before Bucknell was able to get on the board. The Bison went on a 4-0 run to fight back within four, 14-10, and made it a four-point match again, 18-14, on a block by Karen Campbell and Mientus. American responded with three straight tallies but Bucknell answered with three consecutive points of its own and used another 3-0 run to make it a 23-21 match. However the Eagles were able to finish the sweep with consecutive points for the 25-21 win.
Juliana Crum and Kristyna Lindovska each notched double-digit kills to lead American in the match. Crum recorded 15, hitting .324, and Lindovska posted 11 kills while hitting .421 on the night. Smidova led the Eagles with 25 assists and Megan Rosburg finished with 14 digs. American outhit the Bison, .275 to .114, in the match.
Kristen Titley led Bucknell with seven kills while Rose Lewis added 12 assists and Kristen Parks posted 14 digs. Campbell notched four blocks for the Bison.
The Eagles continue Patriot League play on Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Loyola (Md.) in Bender Arena. The match will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
