Volleyball Falls to Bowling Green, 3-1

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The American University volleyball team came up short in the night cap of Friday's doubleheader, falling to Bowling Green in four sets. The Eagles came up with a season-high 17 total blocks as a team—led by eight apiece from Prinzez Zeck and Elise Sterling—but struggled on the offensive end, hitting just .151. 

Notable 
  • AU was hurt by a lack of ball control, committing 13 reception errors as a team. 
  • Zeck's eight blocks are one short of her career high. The senior neared a triple-double, reaching 10 kills on a .292 hitting percentage to total 14 points. 
  • Sam McMillan and Salme Hollas each had eight kills, while Carly Sciborski added seven. 
  • Deniz Dakak recorded her third straight double-double, dishing 29 assists and taking on 10 digs. 
Set 1
  • It was a tight set, with the teams going punch for punch with each other. Bowling Green had 14 kills to AU's 11, hitting .241 to .237 for AU. 
  • Both teams also had three blocks each, but American conceded five reception errors and the home side took the set 25-21. 
  • McMillan led AU with four kills on just seven attempts, hitting .571 in the frame. 
  • AU threw the first punch, going on a 6-0 run early that gave them a 12-6 advantage. McMillan put down back-to-back kills on the stretch, with Hollas adding an ace. 
  • The Falcons closed the gap with a 4-0 run of their own, and eventually tied the score at 14. They separated themselves with a 8-4 run late to seal the set. 
Set 2 
  • The Eagles didn't let another late run burn them in the second set, responding to an impressive spurt from Bowling Green to win it 25-22. 
  • AU had a comfortable 19-13 lead evaporate with a stunning 8-0 run from the home side. 
  • Elise Sterling stopped the bleeding with a kill, and a Falcon attacking error eventually tied the score at 22. 
  • With Sterling in the service area, she put down an ace, then Zeck delivered a kill, and Sterling placed another ace to win the set. 
  • McMillan again led American with four kills. 
Set 3
  • The Eagles were outhit in the third set, as the Falcons swung a .414 percentage to American's .194. 
  • AU got out to a 5-0 lead, but again Bowling Green weathered the storm and even the score at 10-10. 
  • Eventually leading 18-15, the Falcons closed out the set on a 6-2 run. 
Set 4
  • Bowling Green grabbed an 8-7 lead and never lost it, winning 25-19 American struggled on the offensive end, hitting -.027 in the set.
