BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After helping the American University volleyball team take down two power four opponents this weekend,
Elise Sterling and
Bella Marrero have earned a share of this week's Patriot League Awards. Sterling was voted the Player of the Week, and Marrero received the Defensive Player of the Week distinction.
Sterling totaled 41 kills on the weekend to lead AU, averaging 3.15 per set at a .345 clip. She caught fire against Northwestern, putting down a career-high 20 kills on a .455 hitting percentage. The junior middle blocker followed that performance with a team-leading 12 kills against Virginia, adding three blocks to reach 15 points.
Marrero was excellent defensively throughout the weekend for the Eagles, recording a team-high 41 digs and 3.15 per set. The junior libero played a major part in AU's five-set win over Northwestern, taking on 20 digs and committing just one reception error.
The Eagles are on the road this week at the Best Western Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green. Their weekend kicks off with a doubleheader against Northern Kentucky and Bowling Green on Friday, and they'll face Arkansas State on Saturday.
