Shelly Montgomery scored in the final second of regulation to send Sunday's game to extra time, but No. 15 Wake Forest was able to find the back of the net in double-overtime for the 3-2 win to hand the American University field hockey team its first home loss of the year at Jacobs Field on Sunday afternoon.
"I thought we played an overall fantastic game, we fought really, really hard," said Head Coach Steve Jennings. "Wake Forest's a great opponent and I think it was just down to the wire. We had chances to win in the overtime and credit to their defense, they were good enough to stop us. I thought it was a really well-played game overall for both teams."
Wake Forest (6-2) went on the attack from the opening whistle and was awarded a penalty corner in the fourth minute. Jess McFadyen took the shot but it went wide of the net. The Demon Deacons registered four straight attempts before it received a penalty stroke in the eighth minute. Anna Kozniuk stepped up to take the shot and slipped it past Ashley Dalisera for the 1-0 advantage.
American (5-3) notched its first attempt of the day in the 10th minute, but Valerie Dahmen came up with the stop on Montgomery's shot. The Eagles were able to even the score in the 30th minute on a penalty corner. Carly Atchison inserted and Victoria De Kepper trapped the ball at the top of the circle. Montgomery took the shot and sent it into the back of the cage to tie the score at 1-all.
Wake Forest opened the second half with a breakaway down the right side of the field. Jess Newak drove to the cage and slipped it to Holly Brown, who was waiting to tap it in for the 2-1 lead. American nearly added the equalizer in the 39th minute on a penalty corner, but Dahmen came up with the stop on Montgomery's attempt. The Eagles nearly scored on a pair of penalty corners, but both attempts by Grace Wilson were ruled high.
Isabel Terwindt sent a shot over the cage in the 69th minute as American continued to pressure the Demon Deacons' defense. The Eagles were able to force a turnover in the closing minute and were awarded a penalty corner as the clock wound down. Atchison sent the ball in to Rebecca Treharne at the top of the circle and Montgomery rocketed a shot straight into goal above Dahmen's reach to send the game to extra time.
American tallied the first attempt in the overtime period on a penalty corner, but Montgomery's attempt went wide of the cage. Wake Forest answered with four consecutive tries, but Dalisera came up with the stops to preserve the tie. The Eagles had three straight penalty corners to close out the first overtime period but were unable to convert.
Shannon Eby scored the game-winner in the 88th minute to avoid the upset bid by American, driving straight towards the goal from the midpoint and beating the Eagles' defenders, sending it into the back of the cage for the 3-2 win.
Wake Forest held a 17-12 advantage in shots for the game while American held a 10-4 edge in penalty corners. Dalisera tallied eight saves in the game.
The Eagles head to Boston, Mass. on Saturday, September 28 to take on No. 19 Boston University as it looks to pick up its second Patriot League win.
