Box Score The No. 20 American University field hockey team dropped its first game of the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday, falling to Miami (Ohio), 3-2.
American (3-2) had a pair of early opportunities and was awarded a penalty stroke in the third minute of the game. Kati Rothenhoefer took the shot and slipped it past Sarah Mueller for the early 1-0 advantage. The Eagles continued to pressure the Red Hawks' defense with back-to-back shots from Natalie Marsh and Rebecca Treharne in the 17th minute. American was awarded a penalty corner 30 seconds later and Grace Wilson sent it into the back of the net for the two-goal lead.
Miami (Ohio) (3-3) cut American's lead in the 37th minute, with Bea Dechant scoring on a penalty corner. The Eagles tried to rebuild their advantage, but Wilson's attempt at a second goal went wide. The Red Hawks added the equalizer in the 57th minute with a penalty corner goal from Ali Froede.
Miami (Ohio) took its first lead of the game under three minutes later as Alyssa Logan beat Ashley Dalisera in front of the cage. The Eagles called a timeout and went on the offensive, registering four shots in the closing minutes. However, Mueller and the Red Hawks' defense came up with the stops to preserve the win.
American held a 15-11 advantage in shots for the game and 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Dalisera finished with five saves on the day.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow, Sunday, September 15, against Columbia at 12 p.m.
