Field Hockey Edged, 2-1, in Overtime at #8 Old Dominion

The American University field hockey team struck first in Sunday afternoon's game at No. 8 Old Dominion, but the Monarchs were able to net the game-winner in overtime to avoid an upset with a 2-1 victory.

Old Dominion (1-1) controlled the first half of the game, but was unable to convert on nine shots as Ashley Dalisera made three stops in the cage for the Eagles. American recorded its lone shot of the half in the 21st minute on a penalty corner, with Megan Hept coming up with the save on Victoria De Kepper's attempt. 

Dalisera made a pair of stops early in the first half before Shelly Montgomery found the back of the net in the 42nd minute to give American (1-1) the lead. The Monarchs responded right away on a penalty corner in the 48th minute on a goal by Christy Longacre. Old Dominion tallied seven shots compared to four for the Eagles to close out the half with neither team able to notch the game-winner as the contest went to overtime.

The Monarchs registered three shots in extra time, and secured the win with a goal in the 81st minute by Rosario Villagra. 

Old Dominion held a 22-7 advantage in shots for the game and 12-3 edge in penalty corners. Dalisera recorded 10 saves between the pipes for American.

The Eagles return to Jacobs Field for its home opener next weekend, taking on James Madison on Friday, September 6 at 3 p.m. and Longwood on Sunday, September 8 at 11 a.m. Both games will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
