Women's Soccer Travels to Play at Howard, Liberty

After opening their season this past weekend at Reeves Field, the American University women's soccer team begins a three-game road swing this Friday, August 30. The Eagles travel crosstown to take on Howard at 7 p.m., before facing Liberty on Sunday, September 1, at 1 p.m.

AU is looking for their first win of the season after falling in one-goal games against George Washington and UMBC.

Junior defender Kirsten Eriksen, a 2012 All-Patriot League selection, was honored as AU's Student-Athlete of the Week this past Monday after playing every minute of both games.

Freshman Ashley Bonner leads the Eagles with six shots, all on goal, while senior Shaena Alfonsi is second with four shots through two games.

Defensively, both junior keepers got a chance in net as Charlene Belanger made one save, while giving up one goal against GW, while Sarah Dejak made three saves, with two scores versus UMBC.

Howard tied Longwood in its season opener this past Tuesday, 0-0. The Bison relies heavily on its goalkeeper, junior Kyra Dickinson, who made 163 saves last season. They are also experienced with senior midfielder Owyn Manson and juniors Nia Walcott, Jeseca Hinds and Treschelle Gibson-Serette leading the way.

Liberty makes its home-opening debut on Friday night versus Old Dominion.  In their season opener at Charlotte, the Lady Flames fell 1-0, on a golden goal with just over two minutes remaining.

Liberty returns eight of 11 starters from 2012 including Big South All-Freshmen team selections Jaime Bouffard and Brtany Aanderud.
