Klingensmith Scores on Senior Day as Women's Soccer Earns a 1-1 Draw with UMBC

WASHINGTON – Senior Avery Klingensmith scored the second-half equalizer on her Senior Day as American University women's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with UMBC on Sunday at Reeves Field. The Eagles out-shot the Retrievers 23-11 overall and 12-6 in shots on goal, but were forced to come from behind after a first-half UMBC strike.

Inside the Box Score
  • Sophomore forward Maddie Hurowitz had the most chances with four shots on goal, including one that forced a fantastic save by UMBC goalkeeper Kalli Williams.
  • Williams made nine saves in just the first half for the Retrievers, but was replaced by Amara Codd in the second half who allowed one goal while making two saves.
  • The Eagles earned eight corner kicks compared to one for UMBC.
  • Klingensmith's goal was her first of the season and third of her career.
  • Senior Eliza Fisher assisted on AU's goal, posting her second assist of the season, and senior Phoebe Merrigan assisted as well for her second of the season.
  • The Eagles also played two goalkeepers, using senior Tamera Taylor-Moore (three saves, one goal allowed) in the first half, and sophomore Addison Roemer (one save, zero goals allowed) in the second.
 How It Happened
  • American had nearly a 60-40 edge in time of possession in the first half, out-shooting UMBC 14-5.
  • Williams was forced to make six saves in just the first 14 minutes as the Eagles came out firing, but couldn't get any shots past her.
  • With less than nine minutes remaining before halftime, the Retrievers' Misa Kasparcova fired a shot that hit the crossbar and just crossed the plane into the goal before Taylor-Moore could get to it.
  • Taylor-Moore went on to make two more saves before halftime, but the only AU shot on goal from junior Lauren Sanders was saved by Williams.
  • Sixteen minutes in to a slightly slower-paced second half as far as shots on goal, Fisher sent the ball into the right side of the penalty box where Klingensmith headed it into the upper left corner for the equalizer.
  • Freshman Mary DelVecchio headed a ball out of the goal on a shot by UMBC's Reagan Casper with eight minutes left, preserving the 1-1 tie.
  • Neither team had another strong chance in the remaining time, though the Eagles had three shots off target and one that was easily saved by Codd.
