Box Score
American University women's soccer outshot the visiting UMBC
Retrievers 10-6 on Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field, but the Eagles
came up short on the scoreboard, falling 2-1.
AU attacked early and often to start the game, tallying six
shots, five on goal, but UMBC goalkeeper Lauren Kadet was up to the
challenge, keeping American off the scoreboard.
After a scoreless initial half, UMBC was first to get to the
back of the net, finding an opening past goalkeeper Sarah
Dejak, 2:38 into the second stanza.
The deficit doubled in the 55th minute, but American
continued to push the tempo, looking for their first goal of the
season. It was found 20 minutes later when after Eagle rush up the
right side, an errant header by a UMBC defender got past Kadet to
make it a one-goal game with 15 minutes to play.
American's attacking style continued late in the match as the
Eagles searched for one more goal, but AU could not find the
equalizer.
The striking duo of senior Shaena
Alfonsi and freshman Ashley
Bonner totaled seven of the Eagles shots, with Alfonsi
blasting four and Bonner three.
In her first career game and start for American, Dejak, a junior
transfer from Syracuse, made three saves.
AU is back in action on August 30 when they travel crosstown to
take on Howard. The contest kicks off a three-game road swing for
the Eagles before returning to Reeves on September 10 against
George Mason.
