2013 Swimming and Diving Championships Central
At the Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell, the American University swimming & diving teams took on the rest of the Patriot League in the start of the three-day conference championship. The men's team led the way, placing sixth after 11 events, with 52 team points, while the women checked in eighth overall with 25.
Army & Navy took all but one event on day one, with the Midshipmen men leading Army by 101 points and the women on top over Colgate by 56.
After a competitive morning of preliminaries, the men's 200 freestyle relay team put up a fifth-place performance as the underclassmen group of sophomore Dylan Hall and freshmen Giorgio Zenere, Tyler Pham and Michael Kell finished with a time of 1:27.90, a second better than their seeded time.
In the B–Final of the 500 freestyle sophomore Matt Wurm placed third with a time of 4:32.00, to pick up six team points for American.
On the women's side, junior Julia Vonheeringen earned the Eagles' first team point with an eighth-place finish in the B-Final of the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:11.06.
Junior Bobby Ballance put up one of AU's top performances with a seventh-place finish in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 1:52.80 for 12 team points.
The women's 400 medley relay team picked up 24 team points placing seventh overall as the team of Paris Wood, Abby Weingarten, Vonheeringen and Ellie Liang finished in 4:01.78. The time was over seven seconds faster than its seeded time.
Action resumes this morning with preliminaries 10:30 a.m., and finals beginning at 6 p.m.
