The top-seeded American University field hockey team won its
ninth Patriot League Championship and first since 2010 on Saturday
afternoon at Jacobs Field, posting a 3-0 shutout of No. 2 Boston
U.
"Yesterday we had a really tough game and we wanted to play a
lot better and knew we would have to because Boston's a really
outstanding team," said Head Coach Steve Jennings. "This team really has
been on a mission for the entire last year and with the training
they've done in the offseason, the work they've done together in
the summertime and all throughout this year we were really not
going to be denied. It's just a credit to our will and how much
heart the team has."
American (14-5) nearly scored in the first minute of play.
Jess
Davis took the shot and Valentina Cerda Eimbcke made
the save to prevent the early lead. The Eagles earned a penalty
corner following the save but Jaclyn
Anspach's attempt was also stopped by Eimbcke.
Boston (13-7) tallied its first chance in the 15th minute on a
penalty corner with the American defense coming up with a stop on
Ysi Schieb's shot. The Terriers had a pair of opportunities in the
23rd minute, with both attempts going wide. Taylor Blood registered
a shot in the 24th minute as Ashley
Dalisera came up with the save.
The Eagles got on the board in the 31st minute on a penalty
corner, with Shelly
Montgomery rocketing a shot past Eimbcke for the 1-0
lead. American took a 2-0 advantage in the 34th minute on its next
penalty corner. Montgomery had the redirect off the Grace
Wilson pass. Boston tried to tie it up in the final
minute of the half but Dalisera came up with the saves on both
Amanda Cassera and Madeleine Hackett's tries.
The Terriers notched the first chance of the second half, but
the Eagles' defense blocked Schieb's try off a penalty corner.
American switched the field and had three straight penalty corner
opportunities, converting on the last one with Alex
McMackin knocking it in and Wilson tallying her second
assist. The Eagles nearly added a fourth goal after Boston pulled
its goalie, but Ellie Landsman had the defensive save for the
Terriers on Wilson's try.
The two teams each tallied nine shots while American had a 8-2
advantage in penalty corners for the game. Dalisera finished with
three saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
Following Saturday's game, Dalisera, Rebecca
