The American University field hockey team held unbeaten No. 1
Maryland scoreless through 48 minutes of play on Sunday afternoon
at Jacobs Field, but the Terrapins were eventually able to find the
back of the net on its way to a 2-0 win.
"Overall we did a great job today against Maryland," said Head
Coach Steve Jennings. "They're obviously an
incredible team and an incredible program and going toe-to-toe
against the number one team in the country is a good compliment for
our team…I'm really proud of our effort."
Maryland (14-0) registered the first opportunity of the day in
the eighth minute, but the Eagles' defense was there to block
Maxine Fluharty's attempt. Alyssa Parker tried to give the
Terrapins' the lead in the 15th minute as her shot went wide.
American (8-4) held tough and was awarded the first penalty
corner of the game in the 29th minute. Carly
Atchison inserted and Victoria De
Kepper took the shot, but Maryland was able to block
it to keep the game scoreless. The two teams battled back and forth
to close out the half, with Fluharty taking another attempt as
Ashley
Dalisera made the save.
The Terrapins went on the attack to open the second half,
earning its first penalty corner of the game in the 39th minute
with Dalisera making the stop on Ali McEvoy's try. Maryland ended
the scoreless draw in the 49th minute as Jill Witmer found the back
of the net on a penalty corner.
Natalie
Konerth registered the lone attempt of the second half
for the Eagles in the 62nd minute, but Natalie Hunter made the stop
to maintain the Terrapins' lead. Maryland was able to switch the
field and found the back of the net in the 64th minute on a
breakaway. Emma Rissinger tapped it in from the right side on the
pass from Mieke Hayn for the 2-0 win.
The Terrapins outshot American, 11-2, in the game and held a 4-1
advantage in penalty corners, tallying all of its corners in the
second half. Dalisera notched three saves for the Eagles.
American remains at Jacobs Field next weekend for a
non-conference match-up against Towson on Friday, October 18 at 3
p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision
TV.
