Following an emotional win over Lehigh in its last game just three days ago, the American University men's soccer team hosted nationally-ranked, cross-town rival Georgetown and gave the No. 6/11 Hoyas all they could handle. After a scoreless first half, a late goal by Georgetown proved to be the difference however as the Eagles could not find the equalizer in the closing minutes, falling 1-0.
American (3-4-2) outshot Georgetown (7-2-1) 6-5 in the first half and benefited from two corner kicks to the Hoya's one, while senior goalkeeper Billy Knutsen totaled seven saves in the match, but Georgetown found the game-winner 85th minute, scoring off a corner kick.
"It was a tough way to go down, especially after playing so well in the first half," said head coach Todd West. "After an extremely emotional game this past Saturday, it was good to see our team come out and perform so well. We went up against one of the nation's best teams today and showed we could play right with them."
After a strong first half for the Eagles, it was the Hoyas who came out with energy in the second, posting eight of their 13 shots in the period while garnering three corner kicks, the final one proving to be the difference.
The American defense was staunch all afternoon, but the final play in from the angle for Georgetown found the foot of Joshua Yaro, before finding the back of the net with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Eagles pushed to find the equalizer with the clock working against them, but the Hoya defense kept AU off the scoreboard for the victory.
Rookies Joe Iraola and Dale Ludwig led American offensively, each tallying three shots; Ludwig putting a match-high two on net.
The Eagles get back to Patriot League play in their next game, hitting the road this weekend, traveling to Holy Cross on Saturday, October 5, at 7 p.m.
