Field Hockey Rolls Past Dartmouth, 3-0

Alex McMackin scored in the first minute of Saturday's game, setting the tone for the American University field hockey team as it went on to pick up a 3-0 victory over Dartmouth for its first win of the season.

McMackin received a pass from Shelly Montgomery right in front of the cage and tipped it in behind goalkeeper Jenna Stearns's back a minute and 10 seconds into the game to give the Eagles an early 1-0 advantage. American nearly added another five minutes later off a penalty corner, but Montgomery's attempt was saved.

American (1-4) was awarded four straight penalty corners in the first, with Gina Hofmann and McMackin's attempts cleared by Dartmouth. The Eagles made it a 2-0 game with less than five minutes to play in the first half when Carly Atchison registered her first goal of the season with an unassisted tally.

Dartmouth (1-2) had three consecutive penalty corners to open the second half but could not convert on the shots. Maggie Scanlon had an attempt in the 49th minute, but it was saved by Ashley Dalisera to maintain American's advantage.

McMackin scored again in the 57th minute of the game with a straight shot into the cage, beating the Big Green's goalkeeper. Kati Rothenhoefer registered the assist for the 3-0 Eagles' lead.

American held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Dalisera recorded four saves in goal for her first shutout of the season.

The Eagles continue play in the Terrapin Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, September 9 at 12 p.m. when they face No. 19 Massachusetts.
