The American University volleyball team opened the Spartan-Aggie Invitational with a 3-0 sweep of North Carolina A&T on Friday night.

Bree Scarbrough led the Eagles with seven kills and hit .583 on the night. Juliana Crum and Sara Rishell each tallied six kills with both hitting .556 in the match. Allison Cappellino and Rishell registered five digs apiece to lead the defensive effort while Kylann Scheidt had a team-high 18 assists.

American (3-3) opened the match with three straight points before the Aggies battled back, tying the match seven times. An ace from Cappellino started an Eagles' rally, with American scoring 13 unanswered points to take the first set, 25-12.

The Eagles continued to dominate in the second set, picking up a 25-7 victory with Rishell tallying the kill for set point.

North Carolina A&T (0-9) tied the match twice in the third set before American was able to break away. The Aggies fought back, coming within two points on an ace from Brooke Stamnes. But American was able to pull away once again, with a block from Cappellino and Scheidt giving the Eagles the 25-18 set victory.

The Eagles continue play in the Spartan-Aggie Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, September 8, at 11 a.m. when they face UNC Asheville. The team then travels to UNC Greensboro to take on the Spartans at 7 p.m.
